PORTRAIT
GALERIE FISCHER
The
story of Galerie Fischer as the oldest Swiss Fine Art Auction
House shows the development of the art market in Switzerland.
The founder of Galerie Fischer in the year 1907 was Theodor Fischer
(1878-1957), who was director of the Gallery of Mr. Bosshard in
Lucerne, one of the leading Galleries for Fine Art and Antiquities
at this time. With great enthusiasm he runs the business of the
newly established Galerie Fischer. He opened a branch in Berlin,
which existed until the spiral of inflation after World War I.
The course of events during and after World War I was not without
consequences: some important collections of the higher nobility
came to Switzerlandand were auctioned by Galerie Fischer. Also
the emigration between World War I and II as well as the capital
requirements for the reconstruction after World War II had the
consequence that Galerie Fischer was consigned a lot of important
paintings and antiquities.

From 1921 to 1939 Theodor Fischer organized his auction sales
at the Grand Hotel National in
and at the Guild House "zur Meisen" in Zurich. In
the year 1939 the Galerie Fischer had been extended. From now
on it was possible to run international Art auctions in the
generous, stylishly designed, museum-like Gallery at the Haldenstrasse
in Lucerne. At this time, Fischer reached the position as one
of the most successful auctioneers on the European continent.
His sons Arthur Fischer (1905-1981) and Dr. Paul Fischer (1911-1976)
supported the founder and run the Gallery after his death in
the year 1957.
Because of the tradition of nearly 100 years and the international
network of collectors, museums, art experts and art dealers
as well as the central location of Lucernebetween the german
speaking countries in the north and Italyin the south, Galerie
Fischer is still one of the leading auctioneers in Europe. The
confidence of sellers and buyers is based on the widely renowned
and recognized experts, the dynamic and conscientious staff
and foresighted management.
Twice a year - in May/June and November - there are Fine Art
Auctions, once a year - in September - there is an auction of
antique Arms and Armour. The auction catalogues for old master
paintings, modern and contemporary art, works on paper, furniture,
antiquities, asiatica and non-european art, porcelain, silver,
jewellery, watches and wristwatches as well as arms and armour
are based on research, are described thoroughly and serve as
esteemed reference books. They are shipped to clients in a large
number of copies in the whole world. All of the lots are published
in the Internet (www.fischerauktionen.ch).
On a regular basis leading art market journalists write about
the Fischers art auctions and the results in international journals
and magazines, especially in art journals.
From the beginning in the year 1907 Galerie Fischer has auctioned
a lot of important art collections. Only to mention a few: die
Sammlung Graf Harrach, die Collection Chillingworth und Wessner
(1922), die Grossherzoglich Sächsische Gewehrsammlung (1927),
die Sammlung Prinz Friedrich Leopold von Preussen (1928), die
Sammlung Rütschi (1931), der Nachlass Dr. Burgers, die Gräflich
Erbachsche Waffensammlung (1931), die Sammlung Freiherr von
Kleist, Waffensammlung Herzog Viktor von Ratibor, Gewehrkammer
des Fürsten Thun (1933), kunstgewerbliche Sammlung Dr. Kodella
(1934), Jagdkammer des Reichsgrafen von Kaunitz, Sammlung Bühler
(1935), Waffensammlung Randolph Hearst (1939), Nachlass Gräfin
Tiele-Winkler (1951), Impressionisten-Sammlung Schübeler (1964),
Sammlung Kurt Sponagel (1965), Schlossbibliothek Erbach (1967),
Aquarelle, Zeichnungen und Druckgraphiken aus der Fürstlich
Liechtensteinischen Sammlung in Wien (1969), Sammlung Habart
(1971), Sammlung Mayring (1976) sowie Jagd- und Kunstkammern
verschiedener aristokratischer Häuser Deutschlands und Österreichs.
In the sensational auction "Moderne Gemälde aus Deutschen
Museen", 1939, a part of the so called "entartete
Kunst" was auctioned; most of these works are today in
the most famous museums all over the world. Galerie Fischer
was and is still an important agent in the setting up and extension
of national and international art collections.
Today the
leading position of Galerie Fischer is based on a variety of
objects sold (old master paintings, modern and contemporary
art, sculptures, antiquities, furniture, jewellery and arms
& armour), the network to the most important collectors,
museums, art experts and art dealers. Galerie Fischer could
keep its position as one of the leading auction houses in Europeand
even gain additional market shares in recent years. This shows
the auction results and the art market reports. To meet the
demand of the international clients Galerie Fischer extends
its international activities. For example Galerie Fischer exhibits
on invitation of leading Asian art dealers at the "Asia
International Arts & Antiques Fair (AIAA)" in Hong
Kong
The Galerie Fischer is proud of its faithful and renowned clients
and that it could expand its business, especially into Asiaand
the Eastern Europein the recent years. Over the years not only
private collectors could extend their collections with objects
sold at Fischer's but also important museums. On the basis of
these facts Trude and Dr. Kuno Fischer and the staff of Galerie
Fischer are looking forward to celebrate the anniversary of
100 years Galerie Fischer and keeping on offering auctions service.
